Tunnock’s plans

Three-storey extension for factory

-

Plans to build an extension to Tunnock’s Uddingston factory have left a sour taste with some of its neighbours.

The proposal for a three-storey extension behind homes on Crofthead Street covers accommodation for new equipment to increase production at the site.

According to a design statement lodged with planners, the scheme will ‘futureproof the present factory to accommodate increased worldwide demand for Tunnock’s products’ and create an additional 30 jobs.

However, objections lodged by Crofthead Street residents point out that noise and parking are already a problem at the Old Mill Road site where the company have operated from since the 1960s.

Tunnock’s currently employ a total of 532 people there on day, back and night shift – as well as 37 office staff, four security staff and six long-distance lorry drivers.

Resident Kirstie Mckillop told planners: “We struggle to park in Crofthead Street already because of the factory, and the noise can be annoying as well.

“I feel allowing the extension to go ahead will just make parking even worse.”

Leanne Arneil described the proposed extension as detrimental to the neighbourhood - and expressed concern the extension would block out sunlight to her property.

She added: “The factory already generates noise 24 hours per day, loud banging and what sounds like a huge air compressor...not to mention articulated lorries frequenting this already overcrowded street.”

The document put before planners states: “The extension is located adjacent to the current production floors and extends these over first and second floors only.

“The existing open ground floor is retained for staff parking, and goods vehicles will pass below the extension on the existing realigned.

“Windows will be incorporated in the north and south elevations to maximise daylight to the working areas. road, which may be slightly

“However, the east facade will be blank, both because of the requirement for fire protection at the boundary and to avoid overlooking to residents of the tenemental properties on Crofthead Street.”
