Biggar call their men back

- Andy Mcgilvray

Biggar Rugby Club have urged former and current players to return to preseason training, and dispute claims that they have “recruited heavily” over the summer.

In fact, the Hartree Mill club say the only new signing they have made is Andrew Dunlop, who has returned to the area.

And while that is a boost to their Premier 2 hopes, Biggar are still actively seeking bodies.

Club president Alistair Stewart said: “Pre-season training continues at a pace with a great variety of tasks, decision-making and skills to the fore.

“Attendance has been good, but could always be better, with a number of last year’s senior players still to make an appearance – work and other commitments preventing them from doing so – but come on guys – your club needs you!”

Alistair added: “Contrary to the rumour mill, which inevitably circulates at this time of the year, Biggar have not recruited heavily.

“As things stand, the only recruit will be former player Andrew Dunlop, who has moved back to the area after a very successful period with Ayr.

“This is a terrific boost for the club and for those spectators and players still with the club who remember Andrew as a talented youth and senior player.

“The fact that there are no new recruits gives Biggar a real homegrown feel, with players supporting their pals and emphasising the ‘one club, one family’ ethos of a community club.”

Biggar’s pre-season action gets under way tomorrow (Friday) when the senior squad travel to take on Lasswade, giving new coach Gary Mercer his first chance to see how his charges have developed. Kick-off is at 7pm.

On Saturday, Biggar return to Sevens action with Peebles’ autumn event replacing their usual spring-time slot, and this will count towards next season’s King of the Sevens title.

On Friday, August 12, a youth event with music from Room Eleven and a BBQ (entry £5 by ticket only) takes place and the next day the 1st XV host Dumfries for their traditional friendly (3pm).
