Punters take a shine to Silver Bell event

- Shirley Bartynek

Thousands enjoyed a fantastic night of racing and entertainment at the Ladbrokes Silver Bell Racenight last week.

Around 5000 racegoers flocked to the historic event at Hamilton Park Racecourse on Friday.

They watched as the evening got underway with the Ladbrokes Lanark Silver Bell SPFL Mascot Race – which was won by Greenock Morton’s Cappie the Cat.

His victory came despite the best efforts of the racecourse’s own mascot The Duke, who was defending the title he picked up in 2015. But he could only manage 5th place. Motherwell’s Amber the Bear finished second, with her pal Queen of the South’s Dougie the Doonhamer in third, while Kilmarnock’s Nutz the Squirrel brought up the rear in last.

Later in the evening the Ladbrokes Lanark Silver Bell Handicap Stakes (Class 3) was won by Multellie, trained by Tim Easterby and ridden by jockey Cam Hardie.

As the racing drew to a close punters were treated to entertainment from top Blondie tribute act Dirty Harry – who played a host of the group’s smash hits.

Vivien Kyles, chief executive at Hamilton Park Racecourse, said: “Once again the Lanark Silver Bell resonated with punters at Hamilton Park. The evening is of huge significance to the local area and the historic trophy looked resplendent in the Lanarkshire sun, as racegoers were treated to a fantastic evening of racing and entertainment.

“Huge congratulations to owner David Scott, trainer Tim Easterby and jockey Cam Hardie on Multellie’s victory in the historic Ladbrokes Lanark Silver Bell race. And of course to Cappie the Cat who romped to victory in the mascot race. Unfortunately our own mascot The Duke was unable to defend his title but Cappie was a worthy winner.”
