Research your family history Travel back in time with the experts
Scotland’s largest family history event will take place on Saturday (September 3) in Motherwell Theatre.
Lanarkshire Family History Society are behind the show, which has become a regular event on the genealogy calendar.
This year’s event will also see the organisation celebrate their 25th anniversary.
A spokesperson said: “Family history societies from throughout Scotland will be attending, as well as museums and attractions including New Lanark World Heritage Site and Summerlee Museum of Scottish Industrial Life.
“A large number of organisations involved in local history, archives and heritage will be taking part, including Culturenl Archives and Motherwell Heritage Centre, Carluke Parish Historical Society, Friends of Cambusnethan Priory, Lanarkshire Police Historical Society and Friends of Low Parks Museum.
“Schools from Lanarkshire and beyond will display their projects, and children from Our Lady and St Francis Primary, Carfin, will entertain with songs from World War One and Two.”
The event will open with a talk at 10am on military records by Paul Nixon of Findmypast, which is open to anyone who has a ticket to the show or a ticket for one of the keynote speakers.
This will be followed by three other speakers in the Theatre: Robert Reid takes A Stroll Through the History of Strathclyde Country Park; Marie Dougan on Researching Your Family Tree Using Social Media; and Andrew Nicoll on Researching Your Catholic Ancestors.
Major names in the genealogy world including Findmypast and Familysearch will be exhibiting, along with the Scottish Military Research Group, Scottish Catholic Historical Association, the Guild of One-name Studies, Scottish Monumental Inscriptions, Scottish Local History Forum and many more.
Professional genealogists from the Scottish Genealogy Network will join members of Lanarkshire Family History Society, Findmypast and Familysearch in the ‘Ask the Experts’ area to offer free one-to-one advice to anyone starting out researching their family history or who has hit a brick wall in their research.

Entry costs £2 per person, with talks priced at £4 each. Buying one or more talk tickets allows free entry to the show. Children under 12 are admitted free with a paying adult.
The event at Motherwell Theatre and Concert Hall will run from 9.30am to 4.30pm.
