Research your family history Travel back in time with the experts

Scotland’s largest family history event will take place on Saturday (September 3) in Motherwell Theatre.

Lanarkshir­e Family History Society are behind the show, which has become a regular event on the genealogy calendar.

This year’s event will also see the organisati­on celebrate their 25th anniversar­y.

A spokespers­on said: “Family history societies from throughout Scotland will be attending, as well as museums and attraction­s including New Lanark World Heritage Site and Summerlee Museum of Scottish Industrial Life.

“A large number of organisati­ons involved in local history, archives and heritage will be taking part, including Culturenl Archives and Motherwell Heritage Centre, Carluke Parish Historical Society, Friends of Cambusneth­an Priory, Lanarkshir­e Police Historical Society and Friends of Low Parks Museum.

“Schools from Lanarkshir­e and beyond will display their projects, and children from Our Lady and St Francis Primary, Carfin, will entertain with songs from World War One and Two.”

The event will open with a talk at 10am on military records by Paul Nixon of Findmypast, which is open to anyone who has a ticket to the show or a ticket for one of the keynote speakers.

This will be followed by three other speakers in the Theatre: Robert Reid takes A Stroll Through the History of Strathclyd­e Country Park; Marie Dougan on Researchin­g Your Family Tree Using Social Media; and Andrew Nicoll on Researchin­g Your Catholic Ancestors.

Major names in the genealogy world including Findmypast and Familysear­ch will be exhibiting, along with the Scottish Military Research Group, Scottish Catholic Historical Associatio­n, the Guild of One-name Studies, Scottish Monumental Inscriptio­ns, Scottish Local History Forum and many more.

Profession­al genealogis­ts from the Scottish Genealogy Network will join members of Lanarkshir­e Family History Society, Findmypast and Familysear­ch in the ‘Ask the Experts’ area to offer free one-to-one advice to anyone starting out researchin­g their family history or who has hit a brick wall in their research.

Entry costs £2 per person, with talks priced at £4 each. Buying one or more talk tickets allows free entry to the show. Children under 12 are admitted free with a paying adult.

The event at Motherwell Theatre and Concert Hall will run from 9.30am to 4.30pm.
