Rotary Club take Pride helping to eradicate Polio
The Rotary Club of Bothwell and Uddingston were joined by representatives of Brighter Bothwell and Uddingston Pride at their recent meeting.
The topic for discussion was the‘purple 4 Rotary’campaign, a joint initiative by Rotary in the UK and the Royal Horticultural Society.
For almost 30 years Rotary International has been working with the World Health Organisation and other partners to eradicate Polio.
When this started, 100 countries were affected and 350,000 cases of polio were reported each year.
Thanks to the efforts of Rotary and the others involved this has reduced to two countries and fewer than 100 cases last year.
To fund the final push in the eradication of polio and to mark the centenary of Rotary Foundation, the charity arm of Rotary, Rotary Clubs nationwide, are working with groups such as Brighter Bothwell and Uddingston Pride to plant purple crocuses, the adopted symbol of this superb campaign.
Bothwell and Uddingston Rotary have purchased 25,000 bulbs which will be planted later this year in the two villages and will serve as a lasting reminder of Rotary’s efforts in this worthwhile cause.
President Jim Jordan reminded members that the club had always had excellent relations with Brighter Bothwell and Uddingston Pride. He saw this as an opportunity to work more closely for the overall benefit of the local community whilst also helping an international cause.
The club are currently looking for new members to help with our various projects.
If you are interested in getting involved, their meetings are held each Tuesday at 7pm in Bothwell Castle Golf Club.
