Huge house gets planning permission
Three derelict buildings are to be demolished to make way for one large three-storey detached house in Larkhall.
The controversial planning application was this week given the go-ahead, despite South Lanarkshire Council receiving more than 29 letters of objections, including a letter from MSP Margaret Mitchell.
The applicant, Craig Hynd, was granted detailed planning permission subject to conditions, to demolish the buildings between Millheugh Brae and Raploch Road and erect a large house which will be built over three levels.
The house would be contemporary in design and would be finished with timber cladding, off-white render and light grey matt composte cladding boards.
Reclaimed stone would be used where possible from the demolished properties to form parts of the boundary wall and throughout the garden area.
The house would incorporate two blocks linked by a glazed antrium that would run up through the three stories.
The antrium space would link all of the accommodation and would feature both stair and lift access on all floors.
Recessed balconies were also proposed for the first and second floors. The application, however, attracted 29 letters of objection with many commenting on the layout and density of the development.
Objections stated the house was excessive and the roof line would break the roof line of the streetscape and spoil the outlook of the existing properties.
Other objections looked at the building of the property and the volume of the vehicles etc which they say would create a danger on the small road which leads to a nearby primary school and church at the end of the road.
Many say the size of the proposed house would dwarf the existing houses and result in overshadowing. However, planning officials this week said in their report to the committee: “Having assessed the application, it is considered that the proposal is acceptable and that it will have no adverse impact on either residential or vidual amenity.
“It is proposed the site and the redevelopment of this currently vacant and untidy site will improve the contemporary design incorporating a high standard of finish materials and will fit well into the contours of the existing site without having any adverse impact on the visual amenity of the area or on the outlook.”
