Supervision for

- Court reporter

A Bothwell yob was last week placed on supervision for jumping on the bonnet of a car and smashing its windscreen.

Richard Armstrong, of Carrick Way, had damaged the car in the village’s Shelley Drive on August 11 this year.

The 20-year-old had admitted a charge of recklessly destroying or damaging property – and a charge of behaving in a threatening and abusive manner in Shelley Drive on the same date by repeatedly shouting and swearing.

Armstrong had also admitted assaulting constable Stephen Wright in Shelley Drive by attempting to headbutt him.

A not guilty plea to a charge of resisting constable Wright and constable Audrey Peat was accepted by the Crown. Last Wednesday, Armstrong also admitted a charge of breaching a bail condition by not being at home between the hours of 7pm and 7am on the weekend September 10 and 11.

At Hamilton Sheriff Court last week Armstrong’s lawyer Vincent Mcgovern told Sheriff Allan Mckay that his client’s lifestyle was “out of control”. He suggested that Armstrong required a “tight regime” and suggested he be placed on a community payback and restriction of liberty order.

Sheriff Mckay said: “This most recent [breach of bail] is a flagrant abuse of the trust that you were given. It involved premeditation and lying. You intended to carry it out.

“I’m now placed in the difficult position of being asked to trust you further.”
