Stephen makes a splash in Carluke
Swimmer Milne (22) visits high school
Olympic hero Stephen Milne paid a visit earlier this month to lucky students at Carluke High School.
The GB silver medallist stopped by to speak to the pupils about his experiences at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.
Stephen (22) spoke about inspiring future generations in his event – the 4 x 200m freestyle swimming – and sports in general.
Greeted by Carluke High School captains, Hannah Pelling and Harry Richardson, Mr Milne chatted to them before addressing a pupils’ assembly.
Stephen said: “I always enjoyed physical activity. At school I enjoyed playing in the playground.
“I was not so keen on reading books or academic stuff so much, but you know they still have a place in my life.”
Headmaster Andy Smith, who previously taught Stephen at his former high school Perth Academy, spoke of his delight at the visit.
“It was a brilliant experience for the pupils,” he said.
“It just goes to show the importance of hard work and following your dream.”
Following the assembly, Milne showed off his silver medal while pupils queued to have their photo taken with the star.
Milne said of his medal win: “It was my first Olympics.
“I must have been about 11 or 12 when I decided that was what I wanted to do, to be in the Olympics.
“I was happy to go away for my first one and come back with a silver.”
S6 Prefect Chloe Both was full of praise for the star and said: “I loved meeting Stephen Milne and getting selfies. He’s my new idol.”
Stephen, who has family in the Lanark area, hopes to keep in regular contact with Carluke High.
