Morale boosted for Cup

Scottish Junior Cup round-up

Three of the four county clubs involved in Saturday’s Scottish Junior Cup first round ties clocked up morale-boosting league wins last weekend.

Bellshill beat Wishaw 2-1, Lesmahagow won 3-1 at home to Johnstone Burgh and Blantyre Vics beat Maryhill 6-1.

Wishaw and Lesmahagow will hope their form card will boost attendance­s against well-known opposition at home to Cumnock and Irvine Meadow, respective­ly. Wishaw, Sectional League Cup semi-finalists, have establishe­d a good home record over the last three years, and welcome a Cumnock side bossed by their former manager John Mckeown.

Lesmahagow welcome Super First Division side Irvine Meadow to Craighead Park – a previous tie back in 1948 was watched by 24,000 fans.

Manager Robert Irving said: “We have had them watched against Glencairn and Kilsyth, but I’m more concerned about how we perform.”hat-trick hero Jack Currie has a hamstring injury and Darren Lygate is out due to work commitment­s, but new signing Michael Collinder from Wishaw could make his debut.

Blantyre Vics are away to Super Premier League side Largs Thistle, while Bellshill are at Bo’ness United, a club with a distinguis­hed Scottish Cup record.

Boss Robert Sneddon said: “We’re underdogs maybe, but we’re all looking forward to it.”
