Traffic lights project will mean disruption on roads

- Shirley Bartynek

Motorists travelling in and around Hamilton town centre are being warned to brace themselves for disruption next month.

South Lanarkshire is to carry out traffic lights work at Hamilton’s Top Cross/quarry Street and Duke Street/high Patrick Street, as well as the pedestrian crossing at the multi-storey car park.

Motorists travelling in and around Hamilton town centre are being warned to brace themselves for disruption in October as South Lanarkshire Council spend around £300,000 upgrading traffic lights.

Roads and Transportation Services will carry out the works at Hamilton’s Top Cross/quarry Street and Duke Street/high Patrick Street, as well as the pedestrian crossing at the multistorey car park.

And the local authority say the new system will mean that sensors in the road pick up the number of vehicles travelling over that particular section and can then adjust the traffic signals accordingly.

Head of Roads and Transportation, Gordon Mackay, explained: “The new system reacts to the actual vehicles on the road network which will lead to a much better flow of traffic.”

In order to reduce disruption to road users and businesses, construction work will initially be limited to Sundays and some evenings over October, with the signal replacement works following in November.

In addition to the replacement of the equipment, a new control system will then be introduced to operate the signals which will allow vehicles better progression through the town centre roads.

The works will begin this Sunday (October 2), beginning early morning running into the evening, and will run each Sunday throughout the month as well as a small number of evenings.

During this work, the number of traffic lanes will be reduced and it will be necessary to close small sections of road, with signed diversion routes set in place which will be suitable for all traffic.

Once this phase of the work is complete, the traffic signal equipment will be replaced in November.

These works will require the old equipment to be removed and, during this time, temporary signals will be in place.

Mr Mackay added: “While we will make every effort to accommodate all road-users and keep inconvenience to a minimum, some disruption will be inevitable and we would be grateful for the co-operation of anyone affected during these times.

“We would request that all roadusers allow additional time for any journeys that involve the town centre roads during the times indicated and that they plan their routes accordingly. We apologise for any inconvenience that may occur during these essential road improvement works that are necessary to improve traffic flow through the town centre.”
