Pupils explore menu ideas with council boss

- Robert Mitchell

Youngsters at Chatelherault Primary got some tips about healthy eating when they reviewed the school menu.

The pupil council welcomed Joyce Goodwin, who is a facilities manager with South Lanarkshire Council.

She was there to talk the children through the current Go Fresh menu and get some new ideas from them.

Principal teacher Veronica Walker said: “Overall, the pupils thought that the meals were very tasty and favourites included fish and chips and chicken curry.

“Joyce told the children about the Nutrition Act and the balanced diet the Go Fresh menu provides.

“Importantly, the group discussed that pupils can opt for their five-a-day through the soup option, fruit, cooked vegetables and the salad.

“It was agreed that £1.60, the cheapest charge in Scotland, was excellent value for money.

“Pupils discussed the option of having a wider variety in the salad/fruit bar and for more dessert options to be available. The pupils were inspired by Joyce to create their own ‘special day’ menu for health day.”

The pupils received a Go Fresh Magnet and rubber from Joyce and would like to thank her for visiting them. To encourage children to eat healthier food, South Lanarkshire Council have been improving their school meals service.

Menus include nutritional information in line with the Schools (Nutrition and Health Promotion) (Scotland) Act 2007.

The lunch for primary school children consists of a three-course meal, including starter, main meal/ snack and dessert/fresh fruit.

The children also have access to unlimited bread, salad and vegetables to supplement their meal. Youngsters in P1-3 eat for free, and it costs £1.60 for kids in P4-7.
