Grass act as park wins title

- Robert Mitchell

Strathaven Park has been named as Scotland’s best.

Environmental charity Keep Scotland Beautiful revealed this week that all the hard work from the Friends of Strathaven Park had paid off.

The venue has also fought off stiff competition to reach the top ten in a UK poll of the country’s best green spaces.

South Lanarkshire Council’s community services chair Hamish Stewart said: “Strathaven Park is a very special place and, as with many of our parks, benefits a great deal from the fantastic relationship between our staff and volunteers.

“I must commend the Friends of Strathaven Park, the miniature railway volunteers and all the other members of the community who give their time and effort to help make this park Scotland’s favourite.

“Our grounds maintenance team and their colleagues from South Lanarkshire leisure and culture also deserve recognition for their hard work and willingness to go above and beyond in maintaining and operating the park and ensuring our visitors have a fantastic experience.”

The win marks five awards in five years for Strathaven Park and the third time it has been named as the best Scottish park.

Its prize was part of the people’s choice award organised by the Green Flag scheme.

Parks are assessed by judges with a background in parks management, conservation or ecology. Criteria include whether the park or green space is welcoming, safe, wellmaintained and secure.

Derek Robertson of Keep Scotland Beautiful said: “I would like to offer my congratulations to the council’s team and all local volunteers for their continued hard work in maintaining such high standards.”
