Happy couple mark marriage milestone

Family celebrate 60th wedding anniversary

- Leona Greenan

Family and friends will gather to celebrate the diamond wedding anniversary of Mary and Joseph Dick today (November 3)

The couple, of Livingstone Crescent, Blantyre, recently enjoyed an overnight at the Macdonald Cardrona Hotel, Peebles, to mark 60 years wed, but will gather today to continue the celebrations.

The couple, who met on a blind date in the 1950s, were married at David Livingston Memorial Church on November 3, 1956, by the Rev Frew.

At the time, Joseph was a market gardener in Calderwood, East Kilbride, and when the council bought over the company he was out of work.

He then got a job in Simplicity Patterns, Industrial Estate, Blantyre, where he remained for 21 years until the factory shut down.

Mary worked in The Carpet Factory, but upon starting a family, she gave up her job to raise their children – Allan, Marie, Janice and Wilson – as well as become a carer to her mum. She later returned to work in Simplicity Patterns and latterly Botterills Grocery Store, but was forced to retire through illness.

These days the couple enjoy nothing more than spending time with their children, six grandchildren – Stacy, Ashley, Erin, Ellis, Andrew and Lewis – and great granddaughter Ellie-mae.

They also love to go sequence dancing and are often found on the dancefloor on a Saturday evening, or dining out at The Red Burn Farm.

Their daughter Janice told the Advertiser: “We are thoroughly looking forward to celebrating mum and dad’s diamond wedding anniversary with them, and of course there will be a few surprises in store, too.

“They are very active and huge fans of any antique programmes and DIY shows, with dad a keen furniture maker and mum an excellent seamstress and decoupage card maker.”

Mary and Joseph say their secret to a long and successful marriage is simply to not argue and help one another.

A huge congratulations happy couple. to the
