Supermarket plans are in the pipeline

Project could also include new pub/restaurant

Plans were revealed this week for a new supermarket and pub/restaurant to be built in Larkhall.

South Lanarkshire Council approved applicant Paterson of Greenoakhill Ltd planning in principle to build the commercial development on land located at the edge of the Strutherhill Industrial Estate off Carlisle Road.

The vacant site, which was previously occupied by Sefton Park Care Home, could see a supermarket and a pub/ family restaurant with associated access and car parking on the site.

Access to the development would be from Borland Drive in the town.

Three letters of objection were raised from residents about the planning proposals.

One resident in a report to officials said that there were a sufficient number of supermarkets and local businesses supplying good services to Larkhall residents. Another said that there was already an excess of licence premises space for the residents of the town.

However, in a report to councillors this week planning officials stated: “Whilst the application is for planning permission in principle, it is considered that the indicative layout submitted respects the character and form of the local area and any future detailed or matters specified in conditions applications submitted would be the subject of further design assessments to ensure the provision of a high quality development which accords with the various criteria contained within Policy 4 - Development Management and Place Making including appropriate finish materials, car parking and boundary treatments.

“I am, therefore, satisfied that the proposed development is capable of being developed within the general requirements of the policy.”

Councillors this week agreed to grant planning permission in principle for the development.
