Warning at Raith

One lane at roundabout

- Shirley Bartynek

Commuters face more travel misery this weekend as work progresses on the installation of the new footbridge at the Raith Interchange near Strathclyde Park.

Weekend motorists are being advised to expect delays on the A725 on approach to M74 Junction 5, Raith roundabout, as part of the £500m M8 M73 M74 Motorway Improvements Project.

The works to progress the new roundabout will take place this weekend starting tomorrow (Friday, November 11) and will see a contraflow in operation, reducing the roundabout to one lane in each direction.

The contraflow on the south side of the roundabout (A725) will reduce traffic to one lane in each direction from 8pm on Friday to 6am on Monday, November 14.

Traffic travelling on the A725 from both north and south will join the contraflow prior to Raith roundabout. As a result, the northbound on-slip and southbound off-slip at Junction 5, Raith, will be closed, although access to the M74 northbound will be maintained via the B7071 dedicated on-slip.

Access to and from Strathclyde Park will be maintained and signed diversions will be in place for all routes via A725 Blantyre, Bellziehill and M74 Junction 2A Fullerton.

This traffic management is required for the installation of a new foot bridge for pedestrians and cyclists near to the entrance to Strathclyde Park.

Graeme Reid, manager for the M8 M73 M74 Motorway Improvements Project, said: “These works have been scheduled to take place over the weekend to avoid disruption to commuters during the morning and evening peaks.

“Whilst we’re doing everything we can to minimise the disruption, delays will be inevitable. We’re advising motorists to avoid Raith and the approach roads, including the A725 if possible, to plan their journeys and check the Transport Scotland and Traffic Scotland websites for updates.”
