An evening of mixed topics for Speakers
Hamilton Speakers Club held their weekly meeting last Thursday in Ferniegair Hall.
Alex Maxwell described his recent visit to The Shard, with exquisite views from the 95-storey building. He spoke about looking down on Big Ben, with the railways looking like toy trains.
Nancy Anderson told how, many years ago, she had visited the site of the earthquake in Italy. She asked that the media pay more attention to international news.
John di Mambro championed the value of reading – especially classics like The Broons, with their sense of family values. These should be standard reading in schools he said, bringing more traditional values than Shakespeare and Milton.
Topics chairman Colin Jones challenged members to agree or disagree with statements such as ‘Should zoos be closed?’ and ‘Is the space project worth keeping?’.
General critic George Fairlie commended the generally high standard of talk and discussion throughout the evening.
The club meet every Thursday night in Ferniegair Public Hall, 7.15pm for 7.30pm, between October and March. It is the oldest speaking club in Lanarkshire.
People speak in a friendly and supportive atmosphere, and new members are welcome.
