Sporting hall of fame is launched
Ravenscraig to inspire new generation
The achievements of North Lanarkshire’s sporting heroes are to be celebrated in a Hall of Fame, the first of its kind in Scotland.
Former Scotland manager Craig Brown joined Council Leader Jim Logue at the Ravenscraig sports centre to launch the event.
North Lanarkshire Council will immortalise those men and women, past and present, who achieved greatness in their chosen fields.
Councillor Logue said: “I believe it is important that councils should recognise, record and celebrate the sporting achievements of young and old who live locally. Hopefully the high-profile visibility of a hall of fame will inspire, enthuse and encourage the next up and coming sporting generations to follow.
“We are focused on not just to looking back, but to look forward and our greatest contribution to that end is to ensure we have the very best facilities to develop the talents and skills of all those involved in sport.
“I am passionate about the contribution involvement in sport can make to the lifestyles of our residents. I completely agree that we need the best facilities to develop the emerging and latest talents of our young people.”
The region has produced remarkable champions at British, European and world level, and their accomplishments will be recognised and displayed in the Ravenscraig Regional Sports Facility. The hall of fame will run the length of the main corridor, which will soon be adorned by images of the region’s sporting heroes along with tales of their exploits.
WBA super lightweight boxing champion Ricky Burns was also there and added: “It is great to see local people being recognised in this way. Ravenscraig is a top-class venue and it will be the perfect place for young people to come and be inspired by the sporting heroes North Lanarkshire has produced over the years in all different sports.”
