Rovers return with win
Carluke ............. 4 Port Glasgow ..... 2
Carluke Rovers bounced back from a 6-1 defeat by Gartcairn to gain a treble boost by beating Port Glasgow 4-2 in a Central Second Division game .
It’s a win that improves their lowly league ratings while proving a morale-booster for next week’s Scottish Junior Cup, third round, tie at Irvine Vics.
Young striker Greg Fernie played a key role by netting an early double then went on to notch his hat-trick.
Third top Port Glasgow matched Rovers’two-goal lead, but Mark Weir stepped in to rattle in a third to put Carluke back in front, with Fernie rounding off the impressive 4-2 scoreline.
Meanwhile, Kevin Muirhead was in positive mood despite his Newmains United side going down 4-2 at Glasgow Perthshire.
“This was probably our best display of the season so far – it was 2-2 going into the 92nd minute – very encouraging after a few changes and a couple of new signings,”he said.
“We started slowly and lost a goal in two minutes, but peppered them after that with Jay Brown heading in a Zander Wright cross to equalise.
“They made it 2-1, and Dillon Mclaughlin and Lee Narey combined to make it 2-2. Then they pushed their heavy team forward and got those two extra time goals.”
New signings are full-back Lyle Meaney from Arniston Rangers and ex-neilston winger Lee Sharkey.
