Accies are about far more than football

Report points to value of Blameless initiative

All participat­ing clubs submitted a set of evaluation documents on the delivery and success of their projects.

Funding was used to tackle a range of issues, including obesity, heart health, employabil­ity, numeracy, social inclusion, anti-bullying, mental health and wellbeing and rehabilita­tion.

Several clubs are based in the worst Scottish Index of Multiple Depravatio­n (SIMD) areas, including Hamilton, Celtic, Rangers, Dundee and Dundee United.

In total 30,596 people were engaged, at a cost of £16.94 each to the Scottish Government, during the projects.

Hamilton Accies chief executive Colin Mcgowan, founder of Blameless, said: “We don’t do it for recognitio­n but it’s important for the community to know what we’re doing here.

“I know it’s not football but there’s so much more than football happening at Hamilton Accies and it’s absolutely fabulous.

“If you see the people who are non-football and the way they act with children with autism and all the different addiction services, the Shed Men, Soldiers Off The Streets, Training for Freedom, it works lovely around about football.

“Football is a great magnet for kids with autism.

“It’s just fabulous kind of recognitio­n.

“We’re trying to brand Accies because too many clubs are opening about 20 times a year. You can’t get into our car park seven days a week sometimes and on December 17 we will have 85 teams coming here.

“We’re again going to have an initiative for people to bring cans of food for those less fortunate than ourselves.

“Hamilton Accies wants to be the heart of the community and to be strong for the rest of them.” to get any
