Generous friends hand over £7000

- Mark Pirie

The Friends of Strathaven Scouts have donated thousands of pounds to charities across the globe following the success of their Round Strathaven 50 cycle.

At their recent AGM, the FOSS summarised their various activities through another exciting year in helping the development of the town’s youngsters.

The group was updated on the success of last year’s funds in Zambia and Nepal, and how kids had benefited from the school.

Pat Wherrity, from Kids At School In Nepal (KASIN), has indicated that a library facility may be a specific project at the school that has already emerged from the ruins of the earthquake.

Health Help International (HHI) continue to make huge progress, with considerable assistance from supporters in Strathaven.

In Zambia, the Mumba School has grown from having one part-time teacher to needing six full-timers to help with 213 pupils.

Both charities were delighted to accept further funds from the organisers of the charity cycle of £1000 and £3000 respectively.

The Scout and Guide movements will benefit hugely from the annual cycle round Avondale, with Julie Loudon and Julie Letizia on hand to accept a cheque for £3000 each towards the costs and overheads of Friends of Strathaven Guiding and Strathaven Scout Executive, respectively.

Remaining funds are earmarked to benefit all the people of the town and there are plans to site a defibrillator in the Common Green.

Organisers are looking ahead to next year’s Strathaven Round 50, scheduled for Sunday, August 20. You can book your cycle from January 2017.

Meanwhile Strathaven’s Scouts are looking for more help with a growing schedule of activities. To find out more about available roles contact strathavenscouts@gm.com
