Hat-trick hero Mcstay
Lesmahagow .... 4 Benburb ............ 4
Jon Mcstay marked his comeback after being out long-term by bagging a hat-trick for Lesmahagow in their 4-4 Central First Division draw at home to Benburb.
The classy striker broke his collar bone in the first week of the season, but had been training hard for over a month to get match-fit after his operation – and on Saturday he got his reward.
Manager Robert Irving said: “It’s a big bonus getting Jon back, and he certainly celebrated his return with goal-scoring style and enthusiasm.
“It was also encouraging to see recent signings Steve Clark and Colin Boylan come through their debut in good form.
“It was a bit of a disappointment though, after scoring four goals, including a hat-trick, and losing out to a late goal.
“It was 2-2 at half-time, then we went ahead.
“They equalised, we hit a fourth, then with virtually the last kick of the ball they equalised again.
“We just knew that when their player hit that ball it looked a goal and was going to knock some of the shine off our game.”
Martin Mcguire scored the other goal.
The win lifts ’Gow well clear of the play-off pack as they prepare for a visit from Mcstay’s former club Wishaw, who sit one place above Lesmahagow.
