Kerr tries his hand at athletics

-

Uddingston Paralympian Mike Kerr has quit wheelchair rugby so he can turn his attention to athletics.

Kerr (34) is taking part in a Talent Transfer to British Athletics, and will take up wheelchair racing and throwing.

It’s a major change in Mike’s life, but one he’s looking forward to – particularly because it allows him to focus on himself for once, and cut back on extensive travelling.

Mike said:“i’m stepping down off the rugby programme, so there will be no more Great Britain Wheelchair Rugby. I’m in the process of a Talent Transfer to British Athletics, where I’m going to give wheelchair racing and throwing a go. I’m going through that just now.

“It’s something I’ve always thought about; it has come to a point where I’ve done what I can in rugby.

“This allows me to focus on myself as well. Team sport is a lot different to individual, it’s a different dynamic. You’re not relying on others, it’s only my own performance that has an impact on me.

“I’m going to Crownpoint sports complex in Glasgow, where there is a wheelchair racing club. It’s 20 minutes from where I live, and my throwing coach is in Grangemouth, which is great. There’s not as much travelling; I have been going up and down the length and breadth of the country for 10-plus years.

“This gives me another chance to achieve success. I’m only 34, a wee bit too young to retire completely.”
