A BUG’S LIFE

Critters check in to cosy new hotel

- Shirley Bartynek

The boys and girls at Woodlands Nursery Centre in Laighstonehall have been busy creating and maintaining their ‘Bug Hotel’.

It might not be five-star accommodation, but the guests certainly enjoy spending some quality time there.

Youngsters on the nursery’s eco committee are behind the project, and regularly check the hotel for new inhabitants.

They decided to start work on the Bug Hotel after learning about the environment in class, and how important it is to care for all creatures, large and small.

Sylvia Ross, the head of Woodlands Nursery Centre, is very proud of the work that the children did in creating the sanctuary for insects. She said: “Our Bug Hotel is a work in progress and we look forward to observing the mini-beasts over time.”

The Bug Hotel is a safe hideaway for wildlife who might find things difficult at this time of year, and makes use of garden waste and odds and ends.

They can shelter anything from hedgehogs to toads, bees to bumblebees, and ladybirds to woodlice.

While the nursery’s Bug Hotel is open all year round, this time of year is especially busy.
