Chatelherault Primary have come first in an online maths competition run across South Lanarkshire.

Councillor Jean Mckeown, chair of the Education Resources Committee, visited the school last Wednesday to congratulate the P7 class and present them with their trophy.

The competition is run by Edinburgh-based social enterprise Sumdog, who have developed a sophisticated online game-based learning system specifically designed to improve skills and attainment in maths and literacy which is carefully aligned to the Curriculum for Excellence.

And P7 teacher Jamie Mccusker said: “The pupils all worked really hard on this competition and enjoyed working together as a class to make sure that they answered as many questions correctly as they could.”

Primary classes taking part in the competition needed to answer up to 1000 maths questions as accurately as possible while using Sumdog’s online learning platform over the period of one week.

The class having correctly answered the most questions were declared the winners.

In total, more than 900 pupils from more than 40 classes across South Lanarkshire took part in the competition.

Primary 7 pupils at Chatelherault Primary clinched the Sumdog trophy with a score of 709 points, with two of their P7 pupils, Josh Clark and Josh Caie, individually scoring the highest and second highest scores out of every pupil across South Lanarkshire that entered.

After presenting the trophy Councillor Mckeown said: “Huge congratulations to Chatelherault’s P7 class on winning Sumdog’s Autumn maths contest and for all the hard work they put in.

“I am delighted to have been asked to present the class with their well-deserved trophy and it is great to see how enthusiastic they are for numeracy.

“South Lanarkshire has invested in a unique and significant primary schools modernisation programme over the last decade which has transformed learning environments for our young people.

“Smart boards and opportunities for online learning in this way are now standard across our estate, and it is wonderful to see these innovations paying dividends.”
