Zero tolerance on domestic abuse at all times of year

- withchinsp Sandyblair

With only a few more days to go, Christmas has once again sneaked up on everyone.

I’m sure we are all looking forward to the celebrations, socialising with friends and relatives.

Unfortunately, sadly at this time of year statistics show this increased excitement is paralleled with increased instances of domestic abuse.

I know this has been said before in all forms of media and in this column by myself and my colleagues, however, Police Scotland’s position here could not be any clearer – domestic abuse will not be tolerated.

The message to those who commit abuse against their partner (or expartner) is that we will find out and there will be consequences.

We will explore every avenue available to bring those responsible to justice and provide support to victims.

My staff are regularly called to domestic related incidents providing us with the experience to deliver the best possible service to those who need us.

If you know of anyone suffering from this type of abuse, contact us. We don’t work alone and have many partner agencies that offer help and support to the victims.

For those who do suffer domestic abuse please know that help is available, by calling 101, or in an emergency 999.

Police Scotland takes violence of any description seriously and will work tirelessly to reinforce our ethos of keeping people safe.

Also at this time of year vehicle and home security is paramount.

We all have a tendency to leave Christmas gifts and other expensive articles lying in plain view in vehicles, or lying out in homes with doors and windows unlocked.

Thieves will take advantage of any opportunity they have to steal, exploiting, the slightest insecurity to gain access to homes and cars.

A few minor adjustments to your routine can make life too difficult for thieves to target you.

If you are out shopping make sure your car is locked and you put all valuables in the boot of your car, out of sight.

When going in and out of shops especially those busiest and crowded, ensure your bags are closed shut and wallets and purses secured safely in them or in inside pockets.

At home have all your doors are locked even when you are in, and close all windows when you go to bed, again placing keys and valuables out of sight.

Thieves will steal at any time of the day so be aware of who is around you, and if you see anyone acting suspiciously in your community please do not hesitate to call us.

If you have any information you feel should be reported or information on any crime, please contact the police using 101, or via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

And finally from myself, Derek and Scott and all the staff across QB sub Division we hope you have a very happy, safe and fun-filled Christmas.
