Extra spaces found at crowded car park

Fresh look at station park and ride

- Alastair Mcneill

More parking spaces could be on the way at Uddingston’s congested park and ride facility.

The spaces were identified during a meeting at the station between Central Scotland MSP Margaret Mitchell and Scotrail’s Michael Hall.

Disgruntled drivers have been unhappy with inadequate parking facilities at the station park and ride for some time.

During the meeting between Mrs Mitchell and Mr Hall, 27 additional car parking spaces at the station car park were identified. It currently has 228 spaces.

Mrs Mitchell said: “I’m delighted there is potential for 27 additional parking spaces at Uddingston railway station by making use of the periphery and by moving a couple of lampposts.

“Better still, Scotrail has said that this can be done with minimum disruption and that the work can be completed by summer next year.”

A Scotrail spokeswoman said the meeting had been a constructive one.

She added: “I am happy to confirm that we identified a further 27 spaces and plans are already underway to make these available for customer use from next summer.”

Motorists complained last year that they had been fined £30 for parking outwith parking bays when all the designated bays were full.

South Lanarkshire Council is responsible for issuing parking tickets at the facility, which is owned by Network Rail.

It rejected the motorists’ appeals against their fines, pointing out that a traffic regulation order which came into force in 2012 prohibited parking outwith a marked bay and limited the use of disability bays to disabled badge holders.

A council official pointed out at the time: “While signing is not legally required to advise drivers to park in a bay within a marked car park, we have erected signs to assist drivers.”
