The show must go on... AT HAMILTON
MP wants US smash hit at Town House
Hamilton: The Musical has sold out Broadway and is about to become the hottest ticket in the West End – but could it be coming to Hamilton Town House?
Lanark and Hamilton East MP Angela Crawley has written to the team behind the smash hit, inviting them to perform on the Cadzow Street stage.
The hip-hop musical tells the story of American founding father Alexander Hamilton and the revolution that formed the States.
Ms Crawley said: “Hamilton has the potential to host large productions like Hamilton The Musical, and this could be a great way to showcase the fantastic facilities we have available. We know that with huge shows come passing trade, and the local economy would benefit immensely if we can convince the team to perform here.
“It is a little known fact that Alexander Hamilton has Scottish heritage. His father was an Ayrshire man and his family has ties to our town.
“As well as the huge economic and profile boost that would come with the production, the cast could visit the town that shares a name with the American statesman and come to the country in which he descended from.
“This is a great opportunity – let’s show off our wonderful town to the world. Let’s bring Hamilton to Hamilton.”
The musical has garnered huge critical success and unprecedented advance box office sales in the US, scooping a Pulitzer Prize, a Grammy and 11 Tonys in 2016, including Best Score for actor, composer and writer Lin-manuel Miranda. It was inspired by the 2004 biography “Alexander Hamilton”, by Ron Chernow.
Ms Crawley’s attempt to bring the musical to Hamilton comes just months after she teamed up with Holyrood counterpart Christina Mckelvie MSP to launch a public consultation into the future of the town centre.
Almost 2000 responses were logged to a survey set up by the two Hamilton politicians following a an investigation by the Advertiser, which revealed 45 units in the town centre were vacant.
