Food for thought
Cooking lessons on the school menu
Youngsters at Craigbank Primary School and their families have been given the opportunity to learn about various aspects of cooking.
The new hands-on family learning programme, entitled Feed The Family, was rolled out for all pupils to take part.
Last term, the school received funding from Education Scotland’s ‘Food for Thought’ fund which helped them to build a kitchen area.
Ashley Vaughan, principal teacher at Craigbank Primary, said: “After a very successful launch of our kitchen area last term we decided to use it as a focus for our family learning programmes this term.
“We worked in collaboration with Larkhall and Clydesdale Home School Partnership to develop a practical cookery programme which aims to provide our families with an increased awareness about healthy eating, an opportunity to spend quality time together in a fun, practical context and to develop practical cookery skills for the future.
“Our children and families have thoroughly enjoyed the experience so far. The children have learned a wealth of new practical skills like weighing ingredients, mixing, chopping, and working as part of a team, tasting and handing foods as well as understanding the importance of hygiene and safety whilst cooking.
“We plan to round the programme off with two whole school evening cooking sessions in March where our families will cook and eat an evening meal together.
“We would like to thank our families for their continued support and also our home school partnership service for their help in creating and delivering this fantastic programme.”
