Yamakai’s Amy earns cap call-up Club fighters have enjoyed recent success
Yamakai Karate Club have taken a haul of medals from various competitions over the last few months.
The Lanarkshire club’s fighters took three gold medals at the Scottish Karate Championships last October.
Calum Macdonald won the junior male kumite under-60kg, and the senior female team of Amy Luke, Emma Boyle and Roxy Gerelyuk took the top prize, as did the cadet male squad of Louis Galasso, Keir Fraser and Luke Miller.
Silver medals went to Matthew Miller, Keir Fraser and Amy Macdonald in the individual categories, with both the boys under-5ft 4ins and girls under 4ft 8ins also taking silver awards.
Bronze medal awards went to Emma Boyle, Douglas Hay and Louis Galasso in their individual categories, with the girls under 5ft team and the junior male squad also taking bronze.
A squad of nine Yamakai fighters attended the Polish Open, which is fast becoming one of the biggest international open events on the calendar.
Yamakai returned with two medals, both won by Amy Luke, who took silver in the under-21 under-50kg section, before taking bronze in the senior category.
Amy put in some great performances on the day, which were rewarded by her being selected for the national squad.
Yamakai then attended the Wishaw Grand Prix, which again saw Amy Luke take gold in the senior female kumite, and she also won the overall Female Grand Prix title for 2016. Gold also went to Louis Galasso and Keir Fraser, with silver medals won by Keri Robertshaw, Iona Macdonald and Keir Fraser, with bronze going to Matthew Miller and Michael Steel.
November also fighters attend saw the Yamakai Belgian International Open in Leuven, where Matthew Miller took silver in the junior male under-55kg kumite.
The final competition of the year saw Yamakai members lift a number of medals at the Nissan Open in Sunderland, where Liam Carlin won gold.
Silver went to Leah Semple and both of the boys’ 10-12 years team and the cadet male ‘B’ team also won silvers. Bronze awards went to Iona Macdonald and Keir Fraser in their individual categories, with the cadet male ‘A’ team also winning bronze.
In December Amy Luke, Keir Fraser, Luke Miller, Jack Johnston and Liam Carlin all gained First Dan Black Belts.
