Programme to be completed by 2022

-

South Lanarkshire Council this week said they hope to complete building 1000 new homes by 2022.

The exact sites where all the properties will be built is still to be confirmed but Hamilton’s Highstonehall Road and Blantyre’s Morven Avenue and Fernslea Avenue have been earmarked.

Work is currently ongoing towards meeting the target and eight projects that will deliver 204 new homes are scheduled to go on site in 2017/18 in communities across South Lanarkshire.

Daniel Lowe, executive director of Housing and Technical Resources, said: “We are delighted with the progress of the council’s new-build housing programme which will see 1000 new homes provided in priority areas across South Lanarkshire by 2022.

“In line with our local housing strategy, new council homes will be developed in the Hamilton, East Kilbride, Cambuslang/ Rutherglen and Clydesdale housing areas.

“While we are not in a position to confirm details of the exact numbers and sites where all of the new homes will be built, we can advise that the next stage of construction will see new homes built across the authority’s area including Highstonehall Road, Hamilton, Morven Avenue and Fernslea Avenue, Blantyre, where construction is due to commence in 2017/18.”

The new target doubles the figure the council had set for the new homes programme and sits alongside the housing improvement works which they say continues to raise the standard of all council housing in South Lanarkshire.

A council spokesperson added that these new homes are being designed to both high quality and space standards and in a range of innovative and flexible styles to suit varying needs.

Modern design, insulation, and the incorporation of renewable technologies such as solar panels, will also ensure that the new homes are energy efficient and cheaper to run - benefitting both the environment as well as household budgets. South Lanarkshire Council’s chair of Housing and Technical Resources, Councillor Alex Mcinnes, said: “South Lanarkshire Council’s HOME+ programme is delivering both improvements to our existing housing stock and building excellent new homes right across the council helping the council to meet its commitment to the provision of high quality accommodation and improving the lives of our tenants.”

Mr Lowe added “A thousand new homes by 2021/22 is an ambitious target but, with support from the Scottish Government, one that we will look to meet while adding value in terms of a range of other community benefits including employment and training opportunities.

“We currently have a number of sites nearing completion, including 12 amenity standard flats in Uddingston, and only this week we saw planning approval for a new development of 24 homes in Carluke.”
