Motherwell .. 1 Dundee ........ 5

Graham Barnstaple Motherwell’s humiliating 5-1 defeat at home to Dundee proved to be the final straw for under-fire boss Mark Mcghee, who was sacked on Tuesday.

A run of poor results, four straight defeats against Dundee, Celtic, Aberdeen and Hearts – the scoreline at Pittodrie being a 7-2 hammering – forced the board to take action and, following consultation with The Well Society, they parted company with Mcghee.

Motherwell’s results have been patchy all season. They last won a game at home against Partick Thistle on November 19, with goals from Louis Moult and Scott Mcdonald.

On Saturday, Dundee were 5-1 up inside the opening 45 minutes, meaning Motherwell had conceded an incredible 17 goals in three and a half games.

Motherwell fell behind in seven minutes when Zak Jules stretched to clear a Paul Mcgowan cross and succeeded only in heading past Craig Samson.

They levelled 15 minutes later when Louis Moult latched on to a Ben Heneghan knockdown, but five minutes later Marcus Haber found a remarkable amount of space to fire past Samson.

Mcgowan slid in Mark O’hara to slot the ball low past Samson in 31 minutes, and four minutes later Henrik Ojamaa found the unmarked Craig Wighton to shoot home with ease.

As jeers went ringing around Fir Park, Dundee completed their rout on the stroke of half-time when Mcgowan’s free-kick found Haber again unmarked and he headed home.

Stephen Robinson will take temporary charge, assisted by James Mcfadden and Stephen Craigan.
