new school anthem performed by S1 and S2 pupils. Gala Strathaven Gala Committee will hold a public meeting next Tuesday night. It will take place from 7.30pm upstairs in the Scout and Guide Hall. And residents of the town are being urged to get involved in the annual summer spectacula­r. The meeting has been arranged to discuss how the gala will be organised this year. However, it will also focus on what will happen in future years as several of the small committee have done their fair share and will be stepping down after many years’ work running the gala. The committee are now looking for resourcefu­l people who can think for themselves and have an interest in the community to join in this year’s event and see how gala comes together. People are needed for the roles of chairman, vice-chairman, secretary, treasurer, schools liaison, roads and licensing liaison and art director. It will be held at the school from 2pm to 4pm and entry is £2 for adults and £1 for children – prices include tea and cake. Caroline Tait, of Strathaven Academy PTA, said: “We will have a large variety of stalls as well as raffles, tombola and homebaking. Cadzow Academy of music and drama will be providing entertainm­ent on the day. We would welcome any donations of raffle prizes, tombola items or homebaking. Drama Club Following on from their successful production of the Sorcerers Tale last year, the drama group Auld Avondale Actors (AAA) will be performing their second production within the Town Mill, Strathaven from Wednesday, March 29 to Friday, March 31. Doors will open at 7pm for a 7.30pm start. This year’s drama is called Follow Follow and is a comedy play by Harry Glass which centres on two families who are big fans of football which causes some issues with other family occasions. Tickets are now available from Christine Hall on 07719 775 796 at a cost of £6 each. The Friday night performanc­e is sold out but there is some availabili­ty for the other two performanc­es. Rural The members of Gilmourton Rural met up on March 1 for their monthly meeting. President Liz Mcallan welcomed them all to what proved to be a very busy evening. After business she introduced the guest speaker for the evening, Moira Gemmell. Moira went on to give a fascinatin­g demonstrat­ion of cake decorating, interspers­ed with handy hints and several highly-entertaini­ng anecdotes about requests she has received for cakes over the years. At the end of her demonstrat­ion, she kindly donated the finished cake as a raffle prize. Competitio­n winners for the evening were: For the three truffles – 1st, Mary Harkness; 2nd, Janette Smith; 3rd, Sheena Kerr. For the favourite cake stand – 1st, Sheena Kerr; 2nd, Janette Smith; 3rd, Jean Drummond. The next meeting of Gilmourton Rural will take place on April 5 when Lynne Murphy will talk on “My Cottage Crafts”. Competitio­ns for the evening will be flower of the month and a homemade hat. There will also be an extra competitio­n for a half-pound jar of three-fruit marmalade. Members are reminded that names and monies will be taken at that meeting for ‘Tea in the Park.’
