Spooky symbol spotted in woods
A spooky ‘Blair Witch’ symbol has been discovered in Chatelherault Country Park and has since created an online frenzy.
Photographer John Wyer was walking the nature trail when he came across the strange object which had been bolted on to a tree.
The 61-year-old from Motherwell wasn’t sure what it meant but decided to take a picture of it and share it with his friends on Facebook.
He said: “I am always out with my camera looking for interesting things to capture. When I saw this I wasn’t too sure what it was, so I asked friends on Facebook. There was a variety of different responses and suggestions of what it could be.”
One of the posts said: “It’s the Blair Witch Project. The five lines resemble the microcosmic man with arms and legs outstretched inside a circle with a pentagram in the background – a magic symbol or charm among medieval alchemists and wizards.”
Another said: “It looks runic. Maybe something to do with spring equinox.”
And someone else added: “It’s a hex lock. It locks out evil whilst embracing nature.”
Some even expressed fear over the mysterious symbol. One said: “I was there with my kids last week. Take it we won’t be doing that again.”
Another person said: “I walk here regularly and have never seen anything before, but I’m now not so keen to walk alone.”
John couldn’t believe the response the photograph had. He said: “It went crazy. People began saying it resembled the symbol from the Blair Witch Project.
The 1999 film is about a group of college students who venture into the Black Hills Forest in Maryland to uncover the mysteries surrounding the disappearance of three students.
It features a similar symbol which represented danger, and myth has it that this symbol acts as a bridge between the earth and spirit world.
John, who is a retired firefighter, said: “I was intrigued as to what it was. I wasn’t scared by it at all but someone has gone to a huge effort to bolt it to the tree and also padlock it.
“I would like to find out what it actually is, because just now as it stands it is a mystery.”
