Superfast broadband
South Lanarkshire will see more superfast broadband coverage for homes and businesses thanks to the early success of the Digital Scotland Superfast Broadband (DSSB) project.
That was the announcement from the Scottish Government, who said that strong take-up figures mean an additional £15.6m is being re-invested back into the programme.
It means that many places, such as premises currently in very rural areas or those not benefitting from any uplift in speed, as well as ‘new build’ premises built between 2012 and 2014, will now be able to get superfast broadband thanks to the programme.
Work will be complete by December 2018 – and it will mean that 97.5 per cent of South Lanarkshire will have access to fibre broadband.
The Cabinet Secretary for Finance and Constitution, Derek Mackay, said: “I am delighted that thanks to the higher than expected uptake of our Digital Scotland Superfast Broadband programme more premises than originally planned will now have the opportunity to benefit from investment in reliable and speedy broadband services.
“We are already looking at how we reach further and ultimately ensure we get superfast speeds to all.”
