A priest who spent more than a decade serving at St Bride’s parish in Bothwell has sadly passed away.

Monsignor Jack Burns died peacefully in Glasgow Royal Infirmary in the early hours of Tuesday, April 11.

The 85-year-old served at St Bride’s from 1992 until 2003, and continued to reside in the parish thereafter.

His funeral will be held at the church on Tuesday (April 25) at noon.

During his time in the priesthood, Monsignor Burns also served at St Aidan’s in Wishaw, and was one of the first school chaplains of the diocese, at Our Lady’s High in Motherwell.

A spokesperson for the diocese said: “With sadness, we announce the death of Monsignor Jack Burns who died peacefully in Glasgow Royal Infirmary in the early hours of Tuesday.

“We give thanks for the earthly life that has just ended and for all that Monsignor Burns achieved during the many years which he spent in the priesthood.

“He is fondly remembered by many former pupils of Our Lady’s High School as one of the earliest school chaplains in the diocese, by many teachers for his work in catechetics and by the parishioners of St Aidan’s, Wishaw, and St Bride’s, Bothwell, as an energetic parish priest.

“Arrangements for Monsignor Burns’ funeral will be forwarded as soon as they have been finalised.

“His mortal remains will be received into St Bride’s, Bothwell, on Monday, April 24, at 7pm.

“The Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Tuesday, April 25, in St Bride’s at noon followed by internment at the priests’ plot in St Patrick’s Cemetery, New Stevenston.

“May the Lord who chose Jack to serve Him as priest, number him among his chosen in heaven. May he rest in peace and rise in glory.”
