Fake bird Asda be a deterrent!

- Stephanie Mccourt

Eagle-eyed shoppers and passers-by might have noticed something rather odd in the sky above Hamilton’s Asda store recently.

Amongst the usual flock of birds seen in the town centre, a few have been suspended from wires on the roof of the supermarket.

But there’s no need to get in a flap – the birds are in fact artificial.

The supermarket giant took the step after a group of seagulls ruffled a few feathers with nearby neighbours by gathering on the roof and causing something of a ruckus.

Asda say they received complaints about the gulls creating a lot of noise at night, and are happy to report the new deterrent appears to have worked.

A spokesperson said: “There were some noisy seagulls on the roof at night that were causing disruption to our neighbours. We’ve installed the fake birds to deter the gulls and now the problem’s gone away!”

The matter seemed to really take off on our Facebook page, with many readers posting comments.

Naomi Dos Santos Aveiro said: “First time my sister and I saw them, we thought they were real birds trapped on wire.”

Kelly Cook complained: “Seemed to have moved up at mine now they have started waking me up at daft o’clock.”

Abbie Draper commented: “I used to live across the road and the amount of seagulls on that roof was scary.”

Victoria Algar Davidson added: “So glad, I used to have some amount of poo on my car from parking at work.”

While Lynette Daly said: “Not really a mystery, was pretty obvious.”
