Hamilton have big plans ahead for their tournament

- Andy Mcgilvray

Hamilton’s Sevens tournament will take place on a new date this year, and will be part of a weekend of rugby events.

The abbreviated game will take place at Laigh Bent on Saturday, May 6, with a special event having taken place on the Friday night and the club’s annual youth tournament on Sunday, May 7.

Thanks to sponsors Check-it Scaffolding, there will be prize money for the winners and runners-up of the cup and shield in the senior 7s tournament, and the club hopes this will entice more interest as the event continues over the next few years.

On May 6 there is also an under18s 7s tournament planned, adding to the day and hopefully the interest.

Vice-president Ross Whiteside said: “The pressure was on to find a date that did not clash with the overspill of the season’s fixtures and finals day at Murrayfield, or later in May when there is the fall-off in interest as everyone becomes ‘rugbyed’ out for the season.

“It was decided that as a club we would work to create a massive annual rugby event that worked for us and would, over the years, build to be the premier event of that weekend.

“We know as a club that we can deliver on big events and, with the quality of people that we have in Hamilton Rugby Club, there is no reason for this not to work for this big event.”

The club will be calling for volunteers for the event, and anyone who thinks they can help is urged to get in touch.

A race night to raise funds for the bi-annual Chatellerault tournament will take place at Laigh Bent on Saturday, April 29.

The club intends to send two squads to France for the friendly tournament, which runs from June 8-13.

The evening starts at 7pm, with free entry, and there will be a raffle, Irish bingo, buffet, fun and games.

Hamilton Rugby Club are looking for various sponsorship opportunities, such as sponsoring a race at £30 or a horse at £3, and more information is available on their website.

There are opportunities for commercial or personal sponsors to come forward at prices from £50-200 which would see them get their name or logo added to the tour t-shirt for the tournament in France.
