- Shirley Bartynek

Tributes were this week paid to the father-of-three who was killed while working on a building site in High Blantyre last Wednesday morning.

Conor Morgan, from Kilcoo, County Down, Northern Ireland, was working on the Avant Homes site on Hamilton Road, when the incident happened.

Emergency services rushed to the site following a report that a man had been seriously injured.

Paramedics treated the 45-year-old, but he died at the scene.

He worked for Newry firm Re-gen Waste, but was working at the Avant Homes construction site.

In a message posted on their website, Regen said: “It is with much sadness and deep regret that we confirm that our employee Conor Morgan was fatally injured in a tragic accident in Scotland on April 19.

“An investigation into what happened is currently underway.

“We would like to extend our heartfelt sympathies to Conor’s family and circle of friends. Conor was a popular employee and will be sadly missed by the entire Regen family.”

Canon Sean Rogan of St Malachy’s Parish in the village of Kilcoo, said the local community is heartbroken.

He said: “The entire community of Kilcoo is devastated to learn of the untimely and tragic death of Conor Morgan.

“We would like to offer our most heartfelt condolences to his wife Shirleen, his sons Gerard, Anthony and Jason, his mother Brigid, brothers Patrick and Niall, sisters Mary Teresa, Pauline and Rita and the entire family circle at this heartbreaking time.”

A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: “The Health and Safety Executive have been informed and a report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.”

After the incident last week, an Avant Homes spokesperson said: “Our thoughts and condolences are with his family and loved ones at this time. An investigation has been launched immediately and all works have been suspended whilst we assist the emergency services.”

Scotland’s biggest construction union have also commented following the death of the worker at the site in High Blantyre.

Unite regional co-ordinating officer Steven Dillon said: “This is a tragic accident. Our first thoughts are concern and sympathy for the family of this worker, and for his workmates and friends.”

The trade union had an officer in the area following the incident, and was available for workers to talk to.

Mr Dillon added: “It’s a sad irony that this incident has occurred just days before International Workers’ Memorial Day on April 28, when trade unionists across Scotland will be remembering all those who have died at work, and pledging to fight to protect the lives of those workers living today.”
