Residents urged to make use of volunteer service

LEAP offers free Hands On Project to people over 50

- Stefanie Mccourt

A volunteer handy person service is urging Stonehouse residents to get in touch.

The Hands On Project, which forms part of the Lightburn Elderly Association Project (LEAP), offers the free service to people over 50.

It can help with a range of small household jobs and tasks around the home.

Peter Ramsay, LEAP volunteer development officer for the Stonehouse area, said: “Our volunteers carry out a number of small practical tasks such as changing lightbulbs, fitting shelves, changing curtains and fitting curtain poles, changing smoke alarm batteries, cleaning the inside of windows, building small flat-pack furniture and lots more. The service is entirely free to those over 50 who may have difficulties carrying out odd jobs around the home themselves, or have little support or assistance from others. If you would like to request the service, please don’t hesitate to call LEAP on 0141 641 5169.”

Peter, a Stonehouse resident himself, also appealed for more people to sign up as volunteers in the area.

He added: “The Hands On Project is reliant on volunteers, who give up just one or two hours a week to visit clients in their home. All volunteers undergo a disclosure check as well as receive training and daily support from LEAP staff.

“LEAP currently has over 180 volunteers working across South Lanarkshire, and we couldn’t do it without them. Their efforts and dedication make everything we do at LEAP possible.

“However, we are keen to provide the same service in the Stonehouse area and need volunteers to make that happen. Support from volunteers can be as little or as often as they can manage.

“Full training is provided and out of pocket expenses such as travel costs are paid to all volunteers.

“Volunteering not only enhances the lives of those on the receiving end of our services but also the volunteers who gain a lot from giving their time for others.”
