Gary Doctor was pleased with Hamilton’s performance against high-flying Glasgow City, even though they lost 3-1 at the Superseal Stadium on Sunday.

Having faced the top four teams in the Scottish Women’s Premier League 1, Accies are yet to register a point, but Doctor was at least encouraged by their showing against a top side.

He said: “It was important not to have a heavy defeat after last week. Losing a couple of goals so close together in the first half was disappointing, because we had done well up until that point.

“We got ourselves a lifeline before half-time and rode our luck a little when City hit the woodwork three times. We haven’t had much luck yet this season, so I was just pleased we had something to cling onto at the interval.

“We always knew this was going to be a tough couple of weeks, with Hibs and City backto-back. We spent a lot of time without the ball, it was very difficult for us to push too high and take risks against a team of City’s quality, and we had to pick our moments – that’s where our goal came from.

“The players were great and executed what we wanted; they didn’t fold after the third goal, which would have happened in years gone by against City.

“We have a lot to be pleased about. We still don’t have points, but Aberdeen next weekend is a good opportunity for us to get off the mark.”

Accies looked to be matching up well for the first 20 minutes, but fell behind to two swift goals from Noelle Murray and Lauren Mcmurchie.

However, Hamilton hit back and scored with their first attempt in 36 minutes when Joanne Paton’s awkward cross from the left which City keeper Lee Alexander pushed straight to Mhairi Lyle, which she bundled into the net from close range.

City peppered the Accies goal, with Savannah Mccarthy clipping the bar with a header, before Abbi Grant’s shot somehow stayed out after hitting the inside of the post, and Murray struck the bar.

Elaine Fleming produced a fine fingertip save to deny Megan Foley and Mccarthy fired just wide, but when Hayley Lauder’s cross was tipped away by Fleming, Brogan Hay finished well to secure the points.

Second-bottom Aberdeen are next up on Sunday and Doctor hopes signing Jordan Mclintock can make a difference. He said: “It will be a much more even, open game, but they will be thinking the same as us, that they can win it. We’ve been light up front, so hopefully Jordan can give us something extra.”
