Applause for tragic Graham

Mark of respect for fellow fan

- Leona Greenan

Football fans stood together to celebrate the life of devoted Hamilton Accies supporter Graham Guy at the weekend.

Hundreds took part in a round of applause in the 43rd minute as a mark of respect to the 43-year-old Hamilton man who passed away on Good Friday, April 14, just five weeks after he was diagnosed with metastatic bowel cancer.

His family – including wife Izy and children Scott (13) and Freya (7), as well as his closest friends – were invited along on Saturday to watch Accies play Kilmarnock match at the Superseal Stadium.

And they were “overwhelmed” by the tribute to Graham, who was laid to rest last Wednesday, April 26.

His proud wife Izy this week said: “Again, I am overwhelmed by the support of everyone who attended the Accies game at the weekend. The minute’s applause for my husband Graham Guy was just amazing.

“I’d also like to thank the Kilmarnock fans for the respect they too showed by standing and joining in. It was so humbling, and we were all totally overwhelmed.

“Accies – the club Graham loved his entire life - welcomed us with open arms and treated our family and friends very well.

“I’d also like to thank the groundsmen for making the big white number 43 which sat on the touchline for Graham. I was completely speechless. Big respect for that.”

A Justgiving page which was set up in memory of Graham, as well as donations received during the devoted dad’s funeral, has raised over £1500 for Macmillan Cancer Care.

Izy, a nurse with NHS Lanarkshire, added: “To have received over £1500 in donations is absolutely unreal.

“A huge thank you to everyone who donated to this very worthwhile cause.

“We are extremely humbled and proud to know that Graham meant so much to so many people.”
