Bonham frustrated as Lang let off hook

Draw leaves th or nie wood gaffer‘ embarrassed’

Thorniewood United have twice grabbed draws against title-chasing sides in the Central First Division – but were gutted not to beat Cambuslang Rangers on Saturday.

League-leaders Cambuslang took the lead inside 10 minutes, but Damon Welsh levelled 60 seconds later, and Keigan Parker gave them a 2-1 interval lead.

In the 83rd minute Darren Bowie blasted in a cross from Lee Pettigrew, but ’Lang scored a second from a Chris Jackson own goal before John Gemmell snatched a last-minute equaliser.

United boss Gerry Bonham said: “Drawing 3-3 with a good Cambuslang Rangers team, who have been so consistent all season, could have been considered a good result – but not the way it came about.

“For the first 87 minutes we were amazing, unbelievable. We matched the league leaders and twice took the lead, but the finish to the game was dreadful.

“We were actually embarrassed to come away three goals apiece. We had chances, maybe up to six one-on-one chances with the keeper, scored three great goals – which I praise the guys for – but after 87 minutes to throw that away and gift them a goal with the last kick of the ball is criminal.”

Last Wednesday ’Wood drew 2-2 at Larkhall, with Parker firing his side ahead after 11 minutes.

Thistle equalised five minutes later when a Ryan Innes shot was cleared by a defender, but the referee ruled that it had crossed the line.

Thorniewood again took the lead through Damon Welsh in 38 minutes, but Thistle equalised six minutes later through Niall Reynolds.

Bonham added: “That point on Saturday, on top of the point we got after drawing 2-2 with another title-chasing side in Larkhall Thistle in midweek, has lifted us up a place and leaves us well clear of the relegation zone.”

United still have six league games to fit in between now and the end of the season, and last night (Wednesday) they shifted their focus to the Central League Cup, when they travelled to Benburb for a second-round tie.

Forth Wanderers were also involved in second-round action with an away game at Johnstone Burgh, while Newmains United hosted Lesmahagow at Victoria Park.
