The Accies lose again

Rangers rout Hamilton

- Mark Gillespie

Hamilton Accies Ladies coach Gary Doctor has called for a big response against Stirling University after Rangers ran out 4-0 winners on Sunday.

Six games into the Scottish Women’s Premier League 1 season, Accies are second bottom, a point ahead of Aberdeen and one behind Stirling, who have a game in hand.

Doctor said: “Next week at Stirling University will be a wee test of character for the players.

“We have had disappointments in the past and come back, and this season is a huge learning curve.

“Sunday’s result was very disappointing; it was a performance that was uncharacteristic of us this season.

“We’ve competed well against some good teams so far at home, losing narrowly, so Sunday’s result hurts that bit more, because we didn’t turn up in so many phases of the game.

“At this level we’re playing against a good team with some really good individuals, and they were that bit more clinical than us.

“Four is a wee bit harsh on us, but that’s life in this league.

“I thought we started okay; we had some good chances, got into some good areas two or three times, but unfortunately a lack of cutting edge has cost us.”

Accies were unchanged from last Sunday’s win over Aberdeen and had the better of the opening halfhour, with striker Joanne Paton seeing two shots tipped over the bar.

Rangers scored through their first attempt at goal when Rachael O’neil rose to head a Claire Adams corner in off the right post.

They extended that lead a minute before the break when Hannah Robertson beat the offside trap and lobbed the ball over keeper Elaine Fleming from just inside the box.

Accies made a triple change at the interval, but it left them vulnerable at the back, which Rangers exploited.

After four successive corners Chelsie Watson headed home the third, before Adams added a fourth inside stoppage time, chipping the ball over Fleming from the edge of the box.

Accies now dust themselves down and travel to Stirling.
