Hamilton tot gives Sturgeon special message during visit

- Leona Greenan

Scotland’s First Minister proved how ‘hands on’ she is this week by taking the time to visit a baby and toddler group in Hamilton town centre.

Nicola Sturgeon, leader of the SNP, was at the Swaddle children’s store and community space, on Castle Street, as part of her campaign trail ahead of the June 8 General Election.

And among those who popped along to see her was baby Emmeline Boyle, of Hamilton, sporting her very own “Votes for Women” vest — much to the delight of the First Minister.

Emmeline, who is named after the British political activist and leader of the suffragette movement, Emmeline Pankhurst, took pride of place on the First Minister’s lap as they enjoyed a rendition of ‘Ye canny throw yer granny aff a bus’ at one of Swaddle’s mother and baby groups.

Baby Emmeline’s proud mum, Louise Boyle, a family solicitor from Hamilton, explained the reason behind her daughter’s vest.

She told the Advertiser: “I got the vest printed for International Women’s Day this year. Emmeline’s namesake was obviously an inspiration behind the vest. I’ve always been inspired by Emmeline Pankhurst and the suffragette movement and what they did for women in the country. I think it’s important for people of all ages to be politically engaged.

“Her dad and I are so happy that Emmeline is living in a country where being a woman will not be a barrier to her achieving what’s she wants in life, and having so many strong women in politics in Scotland is so important.”

Swaddle store owner Roslyn O’callaghan was happy to welcome the First Minister to her shop.

She said: “We were delighted to host the First Minister at Swaddle on Monday morning. She commented on what a beautiful space we’ve created, and that initiatives like ours can play a vital role in bringing families and communities together.

“It was great to have a singsong with the First Minister and she was more than happy to bounce a baby on her knee and join in the fun.”

The First Minister was joined by the SNP’S candidates for Lanark and Hamilton East and Rutherglen and Hamilton – Angela Crawley and Margaret Ferrier. Hamilton, Larkhall and Stonehouse MSP Christina Mckelvie and Hamilton South councillor Josh Wilson were also present.

Ms Crawley said: “I was delighted to welcome Nicola Sturgeon to Hamilton this week. Over the next few weeks until polling day, I’ll be out speaking to voters, campaigning to make sure Lanark and Hamilton East continues to have a strong voice at Westminster.”
