Digging deep in Reamonn tribute

- Leona Greenan

Blantyre Soccer Academy held their third annual Reamonn Gormley Memorial Sportsman’s Dinner last Friday.

A capacity crowd of 170 people attended the evening at Carrigan’s in Blantyre.

The event was a roaring success with the Blantyre community digging deep once more to provide funds for the charity that was close to Reamonn’s heart – The Good Child Foundation in Thailand that he worked with while on a gap year.

Popular Reamonn was just 19 when he was murdered in an attempted street robbery while walking home from the Parkville Hotel, Blantyre, on February 1, 2011.

During his time in Thailand, he volunteered with the Good Child Foundation, a charity for children with Down’s syndrome.

The memorial dinner marked the first weekend of three fundraisers from Blantyre Soccer Academy.

Next up, the annual Reamonn Gormley Memorial Soccer Festival takes place from June 2 to 4 at Hamilton Palace Sportsground for the junior players. And the senior players will be there on June 10 and 11.

Chairman of the academy, Jimmy Whelan said: “The dinner was a superb evening which raised awareness of the academy and the work we do within the community and raised some much monies for our charities.

“The next couple of weekends see our staff and volunteers work tirelessly to ensure everything is in place to allow our 2600 participants, and parents and guardians, enjoy a couple of fun weekends.

“This festival is one of the largest in Scotland and we pride ourselves in making sure it is run to precision.” needed
