Friends’ Big Fit Walk
Chance to get active
The Friends of Udston and Glenlee Woods, based in Burnbank, are boosting local health by hosting a Big Fit Walk.
The Big Fit Walk is a national campaign run by Scottish charity Paths for All, with the aim of getting people walking more.
Each June, the Big Fit Walk encourages and supports communities, schools, groups and workplaces across Scotland to get active and experience the physical, mental and social benefits of a short walk.
George Henderson, an active member of the Friends of Udston and Glenlee Woods group, said: “Here is a great opportunity for the communities in Hillhouse, Burnbank and surrounding areas to visit this lovely woodland and not only gain the health benefits of a short walk but also take advantage of one of the gems of our local environment.”
Ian Findlay, Chief Officer at Paths for All, said: “In a nation where too many of us are unfit and inactive, walking is one of the easiest ways to incorporate a little more activity into our day. A simple short walk is free, accessible for most and has a wealth of benefits. It can help protect us from heart disease, stroke or some cancers, improve our mood and make us feel better connected in our communities.
“The Big Fit Walk helps put the fun into walking! Walking in groups can boost self-esteem, create opportunities to meet new people in our area, or discover some local hidden treasures. “We’re thrilled to see so many people from across Scotland coming together to enjoy a Big Fit Walk.”
The walk is at 1pm on Sunday, June 11, meeting at the entrance to Udston Wood opposite the Jock Stein Centre in Hillhouse Road.
