It’s all systems go for gala week

- Shirley Bartynek

The countdown has begun with just over a fortnight to go until Strathaven Gala Day.

Festival programmes for this year are now on sale with details of the big event.

The programmes are available to buy from RS Mccoll’s and Craig’s Newsagents in the Common Green and other outlets around the town.

They will feature all the information residents and visitors need for this year’s gala week, and gala day on Saturday, June 10.

This year’s programme cover was designed by competition winner Talia White (10) of Sandford Primary School.

The programme also includes the entry form for this year’s window-spotting competition – look out for stickers and numbers in businesses around the town.

As well as giving details of the gala, the programme is also a useful directory of local businesses and clubs, and is a major fundraiser for the gala every year.

One of the highlights of Strathaven Gala Week is the duck race, which is being held on Monday, June 5.

Ducks are now on sale for the race at £1 each from Craig’s Newsagents.

You can also buy ducks and programmes in the Common Green on Saturday, May 27, and June 3, and they will be on sale from the bandstand in the park on the night of the race too.

Over 50 teams will take to the water to get Strathaven Gala Week underway in the annual curtain-raiser, the raft race and Round Table barbecue at Craig Bridge on Sunday, June 4.

Racing gets under way at 12.30pm, and spectators are welcome to come along and enjoy the action, and some great food and drink at the barbecue run by the Round Table at the Craigmill Brewery, where the Strathaven Ales bar will also be open.
