Stories from world of work inspire St Mary’s

- Leona Greenan

Pupils at St Mary’s Primary in Hamilton have just completed a World of Work week.

Adults visited the school to give the children an insight into what different jobs involve.

Teachers then encouraged the youngsters to think about what careers interested them and how their studies could take them there.

Headteacher Elaine Fitzpatrick said: “As primary school teachers, it’s imperative we inspire our children to think big and convince them that with the right attitude and lots of hard work they really can follow any chosen career path and achieve their dream job.

“The different guest speakers introduced a variety of different jobs with real passion, encouraging our young people to broaden their horizons and consider careers they might not have thought about before.

“But most importantly our pupils understand how the skills they are learning in the classroom can be applied to working life.”

More than 20 speakers inspired the children, from P2-7, by sharing their passion for the jobs they do.

Some of them were former pupils and all said they were impressed by the questions the pupils asked.

Jacqui Cooney from Hamilton delighted the children with an presentation about the varied job opportunities in the world of dentistry, from being a hygienist, dental nurse and orthodontist to her work as a dentist.

St Mary’s was also visited by a jeweller, an estate agent, an orthodontist, a policeman and an occupational therapist.

The P4-5 pupils got into the spirit of World of Work Week by trying on uniforms belonging to some of the careers that might feature in their futures.

And the children from room eight are an ambitious crowd, with dreams of becoming a hedgehog helper, a TV animator, a professional footballer, a scientist and a vet.
