- Kirsten Mcstay

The heartbroken sister of a Hamilton student struck down by cancer is overwhelmed at the support the family have received since her death.

Eilidh Mchugh lost her life to a rare and aggressive form of the disease at the age of 22.

Since the brilliant pharmacy student passed away in March, over £7000 has been raised in her name for the Beatson Cancer Charity.

And now a fundraising day on Sunday, June 18, will help keep her memory alive and raise more funds.

Eilidh’s sister Kerry this week spoke publicly for the first time about losing her sibling to cancer.

And she said: “We lost Eilidh three

months ago and it has been the most heartbreaking time for us all.

“Eilidh was full of life, a keen athlete who represented South Lanarkshire for many years.

“She was extremely fit and was still active up until days before her diagnosis.”

Eilidh was a member of Virgin Active (now David Lloyd Leisure) for many years and this is where the fundraiser will be held.

Family and friends have organ is ed‘ eilidh’ s Day’ to raise money for the Beatson Cancer Charity. It will take place on Sunday, June 18, at 9.30am and will feature a 10k run, raffles, tombola, a BBQ, a bake sale and much more.

The fundraiser has been organised by Roddy Mckenzie at David Lloyd Leisure Hamilton, Eilidh’s sister Kerry and the Mchughs’ close friends, Kaitlin and Khloe Boswell.

Kerry added: “we can’t thank Roddy and the team at David Lloyd Leisure enough for this wonderful mark of respect shown to Eilidh.”

A donation page was also set up called ‘Eilidh’s Beatson Cancer Charity Tribute Fund’ and has already raised over £7000, which Eilidh’s family are truly overwhelmed by.

Kerry said: “we saw first-hand the support provided by the Beatson Cancer Charity during Eilidh’s short battle with cancer, so we want to do something positive and raise as much as we can to help other patients and their families.”

Former Holy Cross High School dux Eilidh graduated with distinction from Strathclyde University last summer.

She was months away from securing her dream job as pharmacist when she lost her short battle against cancer.

Eilidh is survived by her mum Elaine, dad Michael and sister Kerry who are all determined to keep her memory alive.

All proceeds raised from Eilidh’s Day will be added to the fund.you can make a donation to Eilidh’s fund at www. beatsontributefund.org/fund/eilidhs%20 Fund.
