Queen Emma helps crown a great week

-

Strathaven capped a great festival week with a brilliant gala day.

Thousands of people lined the streets on Saturday for the parade and crowning of this year’s Gala Queen Emma Warnock.

Superheroes, Egyptians, Star Wars and Lego characters were among just some of the highlights of the parade leading the car carrying Emma and her champion David Colquhoun to the crowning ceremony at the bandstand.

The gala day was the culmination of a hugely successful gala week, including well over 1000 ducks making their way down the river in the park last Monday for the duck race and a record entry of juniors and seniors for the Crags Race on Wednesday.

There was a whole lot more as the town turned out in force to support the gala.

Organisers would like to thank everyone in the town — individuals, groups and businesses — who supported the gala festival and helped to make it a huge success.

The 2017 edition has been rated amongst the biggest and best ever seen in Strathaven.

Gala chairman Colin Dempster said: “Strathaven Gala Week was another huge success.

“The parade of floats and walking pageants was amazing — so funny and entertaining, and the costumes were simply brilliant.

“Queen Emma and Champion David and the children of the gala court enjoyed a fantastic experience.

“The weather was kind as it improved from overcast mid-morning to glorious in the afternoon.

“Thank you to everyone who helped the day run smoothly, our judges, stewards, police and roads department and to the parks department for presenting a gorgeous venue for the day.”

Next year’s Gala Day will be on Saturday, June 9.
